Chris Asteriou: Sandblasted Billiard with Horn Spigot (23/19) Tobacco Pipe

Like the Cutty also seen in today's update of Chris Asteriou pipes, this Billiard showcases an innovative approach to the spigot mount construction. Instead of the conventional use of sterling silver, the Greek carver has fitted the tenon and shank end with natural horn. While the aesthetic is reserved, especially paired with a dark stain, the construction is anything but simple, requiring expert engineering. Inside, Chris has reinforced the tenon with steel for added durability and has extended the horn tenon with vulcanite for a better grip when fitted in the mortise. Elsewhere, the organic material is seamlessly fitted to the ebonite mouthpiece and the briar shank, maintaining the profile's sleek lines.

The bowl, then, is classically shaped, fitting well into Asteriou's portfolio of traditional English designs, yet juxtaposed against the modern, creative use of horn. Showcasing the artisan's deft finishing ability, it wears an extra-craggy sandblast and dark stain to match the midnight hues of the horn — though Chris has neatly chamfered the innermost section of the rim and stained it a smooth chestnut color for the slightest hint of contrast.
