Chris Asteriou: Smooth Tomato
Product Number: 002-540-0119
Chris Asteriou presents this Tomato as an homage to Cornelius Mänz. The Greek carver touches on several shaping cues indicative of Mänz's work, incorporating them into a piece that still showcases Asteriou's personal style. As a whole, this Tomato features the chubby, muscular proportions often defining Mänz's pipes — coming in at just under four and a half inches in length, while packing a robust form into such a compact size.
The most obvious allusions to Cornelius, though, are evident in how Chris has fashioned the heel and shank. The bowl remains rotund and rather squat, yet the heel trims down the profile, lifting dramatically into the bowl's fore. This cue both slims down the form as well as imbues it with an inherent dynamism that belies the muscular proportions. At the shank, then, Asteriou has flared it toward the end, when viewed from above — a common Cornelius convention — while also offsetting the domed face for an asymmetrical accent. The form is dressed in one of Chris' recognizable, vibrant contrast stains, and the shaping testifies to Asteriou's ability to read the grain while fashioning a pipe: a band of vertical grain aligns with the bowl's waistline and covers the shank face, leaving a dizzying sea of birdseye to populate the underside for plenty of intriguing visual texture.-Truett Smith
