Chris Asteriou: Sandblasted Long Shank Strawberry

Product Number: 002-540-0121

Chris Asteriou's Strawberry design has quickly become one of the Greek carver's signature shapes in recent years and is characterized by a flaring, often bulbous Acorn-like bowl as well as the form's defining heel spur below the transition. While Asteriou is well-known for executing high-skilled tributes to classic shapes, he's also immensely talented at crafting organically inclined Freehands as evidenced here. In the past, Chris has delivered various variations of the Strawberry shape, tweaking the scale, proportions, and finish of each one in such a way that no two examples are ever identical. This dynamic long-shanked variant is certainly unique and is a standout piece among Asteriou's outstanding portfolio. It's a playful rendition, utilizing the negative space created by the lengthy shank and tucked transition. Said transition places further emphasis and visual weight on the poised, plump bowl while also making the flaring shank even more striking — not to mention contouring the bowl so that it conforms to the hand quite naturally. In terms of finish, Chris was wise to present it in such a reserved manner: The extra-dark, crisp, unaccented sandblast really allows the shape's whimsical lines and beautiful silhouette to truly shine.
