Chris Asteriou: Smooth Acorn with Horn
Product Number: 002-540-0124
This style of Acorn has become something of a signature from Chris Asteriou, as much as his modern takes on classic English shapes have become readily recognized across the pipemaking world. In the same way, while the Greek carver didn't invent this exact design, he's made the form all his own over the years — being informed by Danish design cues and Ivarsson-inspired, but marked by the crisp line work and subtle inflections that characterize Asteriou's portfolio.
Full of forward-urging gesture, this rendition paradoxically combines sleek aerodynamics with plump, organic curves. The downward turn of the stem and angle of the transition poise the bowl up front, flaring into a rounded rim from the pointed heel below — said rim kissed with plateau at the fore, while the innermost portions are crisply chamfered. The shank is pinched at the middle, flaring toward bowl and stem alike, and is extended with a mount of creamy horn. Usually in such push-style tenon arrangements, Chris will flare the base of the stem to echo the shank end's flare; here, though, the base is marked by a crisp, perpendicular disc, with a tier above, contrasting the flowing lines of the shank, rather than matching them. A subtle deviation from his own convention, as Asteriou is always seeking to diversify his aesthetic.-Truett Smith
