Chris Asteriou: Smooth Tomato with Boxwood (01/20)
Product Number: 002-540-0135
A compact, muscular, and voluptuous Tomato, this piece is the first pipe that Chris Asteriou fashioned in 2020, denoted by the "01/20" stamp. A brilliant offering to welcome the new year, this pipe presents broad plumpness but in the short length of a nosewarmer — resembling another Tomato he carved back 2017. Whereas the former piece featured subtle asymmetry in the bowl's shaping, this one remains balanced and consistent. The shank is similarly muscular, but is oval of cross section, gradually flaring into the lower bowl when viewed from an aerial perspective. Around the end of the shank, then, is a rounded ring of boxwood. Compared to the Greek carver's use of silver and horn, boxwood is a rarer accent within his overall portfolio, and its addition on this piece is well-considered, the lighter hues matching beautifully with those of the stummel's contrast stain. Said stain highlights a gorgeous cross-grain pattern: A lane of horizontal striations wraps the center of the stummel, while birdseye populates each flank.-Truett Smith
