Chris Asteriou: Sandblasted Lumberman (21/20) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-540-0139

Chris Asteriou's stylistic range is undeniably impressive, as the Greek carver is able to seamlessly deliver artisan renditions of traditional shapes while also possessing the ability to craft more organically inspired designs. This Lumberman offering, while falling within the more traditional end of Asteriou's shaping spectrum, hearkens more to the Danish design style than his oft-seen English interpretations. It's also somewhat surprising that this is the first Lumberman we've received from Chris, but it aptly fits into his appreciation for shape-chart standards.

The tall bowl is remarkably robust in relation to the long, oval shank and the sleek saddle stem, boasting nearly two inches of chamber depth within. However, the bowl's soft, lifted heel as well as the subtle taper up toward the rim helps smooth things out and are common elements within Danish pipe making. Furthering the piece's Danish influence, the stummel is finished in a light-depth sandblast, offering pleasant texture without throwing off the piece's proportions or line work. Specks of birdseye adorn the flanks while cross grain ripples across the bowl's fore and aft underneath the dark stain. The smooth, gently inflated rim offers some tasteful contrast, displaying a warm auburn hue that harmonizes with the smooth briar at the nomenclature panel near the shank end. And the stem, like all of Asteriou's mouthpieces, is engineered for pure comfort and optimal smokability.
