Chris Asteriou: Sandblasted Long Shank Tomato
Product Number: 002-540-0163
Chris Asteriou is one of the most versatile artisans whose work I have ever had the pleasure of describing, and it's no wonder, as the Athenian carver has a professional background that includes architecture and industrial design. Be it his classic renditions of traditional shape-chart standards or his Danish-inspired Freehand designs, Asteriou's work benefits from the practiced hands of a truly skilled maker. Chris has made a number of Tomatoes in his over many years of pipe making, though his long-shanked renderings are undoubtedly my favorite of them all, as the extra substance afforded by its lengthening gives him ample room to showcase his talent for shaping. This particular example does just that, with its trim saddle stem meeting the shank face at a base that matches it almost perfectly, giving the stummel an undercurve that's uninterrupted in its flow until the stem's base gives way to the bit. The shank is flared to the end, tapering to the cheeked transition and lent some extra height as well, accentuating the vertical presence of the piece. The broad, squat bowl sits atop a lifted heel with a chamfered rim leading into a thickly-walled chamber for added insulation while smoking. The bowl is large enough to shoulder the vast majority of the visual weight, though the extended shank's slight upturn and gradual flare ensure that it, too, is given attention, promoting a natural path for the eye to travel from button to rim. A dark, textural sandblast dresses the stummel, revealing undulating growth rings that not only encircle the bowl, but continue down the length of the shank which follows the curvature of the grain fantastically. Not only is this a shapely, attractive pipe, from a highly talented artisan, it also just feels wonderful in hand, as fingers naturally cradle the plump bowl, the transition left wide enough to drape a thumb over comfortably.-John McElheny
