Chris Asteriou: Sandblasted Natural Rhodesian Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-540-0164
Chris Asteriou is a Greek carver that can craft shape-chart standards just as easily as he can whimsical, gestural Freehands, showcasing a deft understanding of shaping, design, and finishing. This Rhodesian is a more straight-forward rendition of the shape than what we've previously seen from the artisan, featuring a muscular, stolid bowl paired to a rounded shank and sleek, tapered stem — the combination calling to mind vintage renditions from iconic English and French marques. The bowl possesses the iconic beadlines often associated with shape, set just below the domed rim, demarcating it from the rest of the stummel. The shank extends from the tight-knit transition, which showcases a subtle hint of cheeking, before giving way to the tapered stem of brindled vulcanite, creating a crisp, streamlined profile that conforms to the hand with ease.
Asteriou once again showcases his impeccable ability in the sandblasting cabinet, as subtle stacks of growth rings mark the base of the bowl while whorls of calcified birdseye adorn the rim. He's opted to leave this piece natural and unstained, leaving the grain of the briar to speak for itself, and speak it does, quite nicely. It's a handsome, robust piece from the Greek carver, with the vibrant, orange-hued color of the stummel perfectly complemented by the dark, stark tones of the cumberland stem. Refined and elegant, this piece is one that can't be missed.--Davin Hylton
