Chris Asteriou: Smooth Bent Apple with Corian Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-540-0203
Chris Asteriou has quite a unique approach to design, something undoubtedly informed by his formal education as an architect, his following career in that field, and his experience in industrial design. Chris began his craft with a great admiration for classic Anglo-French marques and the tradition of Old World pipe design. As he continued, however, his awareness of the Danish and Japanese schools grew, as did his fascination with them, leading to pieces with more implied momentum, more softness, and more organicism about their builds. This bent Apple is an impressive display of that influence, displaying a build that's hearty and robust, yet rich with supple curvature.
In silhouette, this pipe showcases a style reminiscent of the American Revival school of pipe making, with thickness present in nearly each of its components, save for the stem. Said stem is a trim, sleek, and elegantly curved saddle of jet-black vulcanite that marries to the shank at a trim accent of vibrant, speckled blue Corian: a synthetic material developed by Dupont in 1967 that comprises crushed aluminum hydroxide stabilized with acrylic polymer. The material has found widespread use as countertops, and it's available in a vast array of colors, making it a unique and exciting accent to pipes which Asteriou has employed here in striking fashion. The shank here ebbs out of a wide transition, lifting and curling as it tapers gently to meet the Corian accent and poise the stem for comfortable smoking. Up front, the bowl sits atop a lifting heel, the heel's line a smooth continuation of the undercurve present through the underside of the shank, affording this pipe a graceful posture that effortlessly holds the bowl aloft. From this lifting heel, a broad, low-set waistline affords the bowl plenty of plump contours for the hand to appreciate, while the walls take on an arcing, gently forward-urging taper to the chamfered rim. A comfortable pipe with a soft and reassuring presence, the stummel here has been dressed in a warm, mahogany-hued stain that showcases a wrapping band of dense flame grain through the flanks and a vast basin of birdseye through the underside.-John McElheny
