Clark Layton: Sandblasted Long Shank Blowfish
Product Number: 002-781-0002
The first thing I thought of when seeing the profile of this briar was the long-shanked pipes of Vladimir Grechukhin, which is understandable given that both Vladimir Grechukhin and Clark Layton really do mean it when "Long Shank" is included in a shape's name. However, this Layton at least does show a very different approach otherwise; where Grehcukhin's long-shanked shapes tend to play a lot with asymmetry and its effect on different perspectives, here Clark Layton has produced a design I would call rather minimalist, forgoing asymmetry and focusing instead on the easy, gradual flow of lines and gesture.
The resulting silhouette, I have to say, is simply lovely. Along with that, the forward shift of the bowl and its combination of elongation and broad, rounded panels works out very nicely in hand — both in how the form fits in a grip and in the leverage it provides to counteract having so much briar stretching so far to the rear. To top things off, Clark even managed shaping in such a way that the end result is also a stable sitter.
