Clark Layton: Smooth Acorn
Product Number: 002-781-0023
A smooth pipe is something of a rarity from Clark Layton, the American carver being especially discriminant with his briar (and being quite the exceptional sandblaster). Out of all the pipes we've received from Clark, only four have showcased a smooth finish, this Acorn being the fifth. And what smooth pipe it is — immediately my eyes were drawn to how perfectly and symmetrically the flanking bands of cross grain are oriented, sweeping up the flaring bowl to position a dense sea of pinpricked birdseye all across the fore. Shape-wise, it's a rather substantial briar, the bowl marked by a bulbous nature, even with its sweeping, downward taper toward the spurred heel, and the shank continues this muscularity. The hearty proportions fit well into the American tradition, taking the minimalist style, smooth lines, and genteel curves of the Danish school and rendering them in a more robust style. With grain this impressive, Layton has kept the finish traditionally understated, with a ruby-blonde contrast stain paired handsomely to a jet-black stem.-Truett Smith
