Clark Layton: Sandblasted Pear
Product Number: 002-781-0025
A companion piece of sorts to another Pear we previously received from Clark Layton, this example is rife with organicism, supple curves, and impressive line work. A crisp ridgeline emanates from the right side of the teardrop shank, following the underside's consistent curve to travel up along the bowl's fore before eventually concluding at the rim. The plump bowl rises smoothly from out of the curling transition, with the sweeping underside gradually guiding the eye to the poised bowl up front. Finish-wise, Clark's skill in the blasting cabinet is on full display and truly shines on this piece: Rugged, rippling waves of ring grain creep up the bowl, and as craggy as this blast is, it doesn't distort the crisp ridgeline or drastically alter the shaping of the overall composition. For a subtle, yet tasteful accenting touch, Layton has left the inner rim and shank face smooth, having stained them a light chestnut color to complement the rest of the stummel's tan tones exceptionally well.- Jeffery Sitts
