Clark Layton: Sandblasted Pear
Product Number: 002-781-0026
Like the other Pear in this update of Clark Layton pipes, this piece from the American carver displays a softly flaring bowl and gently rounded rim. Other than that, though, this is a distinctly different rendition from Layton. The profile is defined by the underside's consistent curve from shank end to rim, the arc seamless and elegant. Clark has echoed said curve, then, with the teardrop shank's resulting ridgeline — traveling the length of the shank, it curls in unison with the bowl's fore to terminate at the rim. Impressively, the hard line is still noticeable within the sandblasted finish. Layton is known for his sandblasts, and this is one of the best we've seen from him: The deeply grooved ring grain couldn't be more stimulating yet the craggy texture remains consistent and concise, not distracting from the shape's form. To rival the textured finish, Clark presents a stark color palette, contrasting the dark chocolate stain against a cumberland stem of sand and Spanish moss hues.-Truett Smith
