Clark Layton: Smooth Elephant's Foot with Horn Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-781-0032
This is a special pipe from Clark Layton, not because it commemorates something in particular or because it utilizes some never-before-seen material. It's special because we've never before received either an Elephant's Foot nor a horn-accented pipe from Clark. Furthermore, the American artisan has fashioned an exceptional, slightly unique iteration of the iconic Bo Nordh design. The bowl itself remains conventional — marked by domed sections fore and aft separated by a crisp, tapering panel through the center — but Layton has fitted it to a straight shank and stem combination; whereas most versions are sinuously bent. Such a choice produces a much sleeker profile, poising the comparatively bulbous bowl on the end. The shank, then, is extended by a long ferrule of horn, a fitting Danish-style accent for a shape with Danish roots, which flares toward the mouthpiece, echoed by the shaping of the saddle stem's base. Deft accent work is something of a milestone for a pipemaker, and while Clark is no stranger to alternative, accenting materials, like bamboo and moose antler, this example is particularly impressive and bespeaks his skill as a craftsman.-Truett Smith
