Clark Layton: Sandblasted Pear
Product Number: 002-781-0034
Other carvers certainly produce their own versions of the Pear shape, but few fashion the design as often as Clark Layton. The American artisan's portfolio is studded with striking iterations of the organic form, all differing in subtle variances or color palettes. This particular iteration stays true to the softly rounded, Acorn-like bowl, paired here to a gentle transition and comparatively robust shank. Such proportions are common within American pipemaking, combining the soft, elegant lines associated with Danish pipe design alongside hearty substance. This piece from Clark does well to embody that style and as a result conforms wonderfully to wrapped fingers. Furthermore, Layton is known for his sandblasts, and such a comfortable in hand feel is made all the more delightful thanks to the mahogany-stained sandblast here. Crisp, concise, and full of ring grain, the stummel is paired to a cumberland stem, the warm hues complementing the briar's stain, while the domed base of the mouthpiece echoes the bowl's plump curvature.-Truett Smith
