Clark Layton: Sandblasted Tomato

Product Number: 002-781-0036

Clark Layton should send his briar cutter a bonus. Incredible ring grain rises up the bowl of this squat Tomato in symmetrical and perfectly oriented fashion. The rim is smooth and not particularly wide, given the shape restrictions of the Tomato, but it is dramatically chamfered and color toned to resonate with the mouthpiece. An oval shank extends from a soft transition, giving the piece a sturdier appearance from above or below. That shank curves upward to the mouthpiece, gently and gradually expanding in diameter to the offset saddle stem of cumberland. Overall, it's a dark presentation, with just enough contrasting color to keep things interesting without becoming ostentatious. Good pipemakers know the value of restraint, and while this piece is not what I would call restrained in shape, revealing remarkable design decisions, it is to be admired for maintaining subtlety.
