Clark Layton: Sandblasted Pear
Product Number: 002-781-0038
Perhaps Clark Layton's most frequently produced shape, the Pear is an inherently organic shape, marked by plump curves, a high-set waistline, and an allowance for diversity in its exact execution. The American carver offers another rendition here, and it's one of his smaller, more compact iterations — less than four and half inches long and weighing barely 36 grams. Shape-wise, it presents a more sinuous style of S-curve, matched by the bowl's affably rounded nature, but the bowl is more upright and less forward-urging than some of Layton's other iterations. Such shaping draws focus to the overall fluidness of the profile, tightening the underside's curve as it arches up the bowl's fore. Being more upright, the bowl's lines are more pronounced, lending it a more robust appearance, accentuated further by the shank's taper toward the transition. A conveniently sized pipe with a take-anywhere disposition, this piece is ready for comfortable clenching, and the concise sandblast lacks for nothing in regard to intriguing in hand texture.-Truett Smith
