Clark Layton: Partially Sandblasted Chernobyl Fish Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-781-0050

American carver Clark Layton fashions a wide range of shapes, but his work often emphasizes the organic and muscular above all else, and his Chernobyl Fish happily marries those characteristics together to create something truly unique. The Chernobyl Fish is a shape we've seen only once before from Layton, and it could be accurately described as a modified Blowfish. The name "Chernobyl" immediately brings to mind radiation and mutation, so it makes sense why Layton would opt to describe his particular rendition of the Blowfish with that name, as his iteration of the shape is familiar yet distinctive in its specifics.

Typically, the Blowfish is known for its asymmetry, and that remains true here, with a wrapping panel of briar lopsidedly bifurcating the entire stummel. The flanks of the bowl and shank, however, are more or less harmonious in their shaping and proportions. Instead of using panels and ridgelines to emphasize the asymmetry of the stummel's flanks, as is common, Layton has opted to dress half of the stummel in a rugged, dark sandblast and leave the other half smooth, allowing the visual and tactile differences of the contrasting finishes to articulate the shape's playful imbalance. A demurely curved saddle stem of multicolored vulcanite tops off the design and fits push-style into the rear of the shank, the mortise there marked with a trim band of brass. The partial sandblast and auburn-hued smooth finish both accentuate a wealth of birdseye on either flank of the stummel, while the smooth band across the top and bottom of the stummel displays some stellar cross grain.
