Cornelius Manz: Smooth Fish Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-831-0006
If the flipping tail-like shank of this Fish seems familiar, it's because Cornelius Mänz likely influenced a carver whose rendition you may have encountered. Indeed, this tight bundle of geometry, defined by a single sweeping curve at the underside joining both the fore of a well-rounded, forward-inclined bowl and the broad, aftward face of an upward-flicking shank, is classic Mänz. It serves to offer the shape a strong sense of implied momentum, while also aiding both in terms of ergonomics and streamlined disposition. Not to be overlooked is the gorgeous contrast stain at play here, serving to highlight a marvelous display of cross-grain, and an especially exquisite show of birdseye. Mänz is acutely heralded for his stem work, and this piece does not disappoint, as the gently downturned push-style saddle bit is certain to be remarkably comfortable in the jaw.
