Cornelius Manz: Sandblasted Blowfish with Horn Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-831-0009
In a true testament to the phrase "looks can be deceiving," this piece from Cornelius Mänz is, in fact, a Blowfish. It's a complete deviation from the standard archetype, looking very much like bent Apple/Egg in profile, at least when viewing the left side. The right side, though, has been slightly paneled, emphasizing two striking ridgelines fore and aft. Instead of the typical cross-grain/birdseye orientation, Mänz has cut this block to feature straight grain on the flanks and plateau at the rim, sandblasting it all to intersect the vertical striations with rippling ring grain. Accented with some of Mänz's old stock French horn and one of his expertly crafted stems, it's a playful and utterly unique take on the Blowfish, bespeaking the German carver's genius creativity and sublime craftsmanship.
