Dasha Florov: Sandblasted Fish with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-797-0005
Alex Florov is known far and wide for his complex, sculptural freehands, often pushing the boundaries of what we even thought possible in pipe design. While his daughter Dasha also produces a number of more creative numbers, currently she seems to be focused on mastering the classics. Judging by this elongated, gestural take on the traditional Ivarsson Fish, I'd say she's done just that, and then some. She's handled the shape's signature teardop line in a way that's both true to the original form and reflective of her own style, keeping it crisp and pronounced from shank end to rim. Combined with the cheeking of the bowl around the transition, that more aggressive approach works to outline the piece's strong, curling silhouette in profile, emphasizing the rather playful gesture of the shank and stem's outstretched S-curve. As an additional nod to tradition, she's kept the palette dark and reserved, finishing the briar in a low-profile sandblast, accented only by a trim band of boxwood along the shank face. Beautiful work all around.
