Dasha Florov: Sandblasted Fish with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-797-0006
Within this debut batch of pipes from Dasha Florov, the young artisan presented us with not one but two versions of the classic Ivarsson Fish. Where the first emphasized the strong curling gesture of the silhouette by elongating the shank and really drawing out the S-curve in profile, this rendition goes for the opposite approach — keeping the same stout and muscular proportions, but condensing and compressing that gesture into a playfully chubby pocket pipe. Scale aside, Dasha's handled the teardrop ridge and overall flow of the piece just as expertly, keeping it pronounced and crisp to outline the arcing line of the underside. What's more, she's added a touch of cant to the bowl itself, orienting the waistline diagonally to compensate for the sheer brevity of the form and offer a more natural configuration in hand. Like the the other Fish, for this piece's finish Dasha went classical to boot: a jet-black, low-profile sandblast paired to a minimalist boxwood accent along the shank face. While each is quite impressive in its respective right, I have to say adding both of them to your collection would make for a hell of a two day set.
