Dasha Florov: Smooth Angel Fish (Slonim)
Product Number: 002-797-0007
Up until now, the work of Dasha Florov has adhered to a fairly classical framework. Granted, her pieces have gotten progressively more playful to my eye, and often seemed to place a certain emphasis on roundness and curve. This fellow sees the young carver mixing things up a bit, though given her lineage, the daughter of Alex Florov seems to be borrowing a few pages from her father's book here.
Indeed, this Angel Fish boasts an active, dynamic sense of presence, the result of its neatly triangular bowl culminating in a crisp point at the heel, contrasted by a gently-curved fin-like ridge at the right flank. This arrowhead-like form is beautifully supported by a muscular, albeit abrupt shank, guiding the eye to a seriously striking cumberland saddle stem. Dasha's brilliant stemwork truly becomes one with the composition as a whole, its dynamically diagonal stem base sitting at the exact counter-angle to the bowl's aft when viewed from the left flank. As a Slonim-grade piece (Florov's highest), each line and facet of the composition serves to brilliantly define the differing regions of grain pattern at play here, with broad pools of birdseye at each flank, and cross-grain in all the right places. Stellar work.- Daniel Bumgardner
