Dasha Florov: Smooth Sleeping Fish Tobacco Pipe

The sleeping Fish is a shape we first saw from Nanna Ivarsson in 2007, with a curling gesture and tight-knit profile as though the bowl was swaddled by the lines of the shank, and completely evocative from one end to another. Inspired by that shape, and as part of her study of the Ivarsson family's work, Dasha Florov has here worked with a similar design. The bowl is more spherical in style and forward of cant, while the shank curls in a crisp arc around the rear, rather than overlapping, giving it a sense of motion rather than the comfortable, stable poise of Nanna's renditions. It's as if the piece is bedding down for the night, rather than being deep in slumber. It's in this active profile that we see Dasha's own unique hand in the piece — not a recreation, but a beautifully inspired piece, and one in which she has not hesitated to imbue with a personal touch.
