Dasha Florov: Partially Sandblasted Long Shank Cup and Ball Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-797-0014
The "Cup and Ball" shape is a playful piece, and one which we've seen from Alex Florov, though this is the first from Dasha. Meant to evoke the appearance of the childhood game, a spherical bowl is perched at the end of a lean line of shank, the two elements delineated at the transition by a dual finish that presents a smooth polish at the bowl, with a crisp, darker sandblast behind. More interesting than that is the style of shank, for which Andy has coined the term "neo-Ivarsson" — it evokes the soft, lengthy lines that are so common in the work of the late Lars Ivarsson, who has been so influential on both of the Florovs. Indeed, it's this line, fluid yet subtle of curve, that gives the piece its languid presence, while still supporting its evocative profile. Excellent work.
