Dasha Florov: Smooth Horn with Ivorite Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-797-0016

A design we've seen before from Dasha Florov, this Horn is steeped in Danish shaping cues. In profile, the form follows the traditional Danish archetype, the shank flaring and curling gradually into the bowl, virtually eliminating any semblance of transition. The bowl terminates at a crisp ridge just below the rim — the only hard line on the entire piece — giving way to speckled crown of plateau. Meanwhile, subtle hints of asymmetry accent the stummel, from the slight undulating of the rim to one flank a touch more raised than the other. It's a testament to Dasha's shaping skill, fashioning the design according to the briar's natural grain. To accent, Florov has interrupted the lines of the shank with a wedding band of ivorite, and the domed saddle stem concludes the shank's trajectory and echoes the curves of the ivorite. Dasha's work often looks to the Danish tradition for inspiration, making this an excellent example of the carver's style, and is always imbued with exacting engineering and craftsmanship, particularly evident in this piece's trim and comfortable button work.
