David Huber: Smooth Tomato (6019)

Product Number: 002-755-0048

Often times a pipe of particular mass and muscularity isn't described as "dynamic" or imbued with a strong sense of momentum. I guess that makes this Tomato from David Huber something of an exception. This is one of the larger pieces I've seen from the American artisan, and from shank to bowl, it possesses a considerable amount of robust heartiness. The bowl is squat and broad, matched by an elongated shank of equal stoutness. That said, however, the lines of the profile belie the proportions — the stem and shank flowing elegantly into the dramatically forward canted bowl. Such shaping lends the form a dynamical stance and flowing sense typically not associated with larger pipes. That combination makes this piece something of an illusion in the pictures: The lines of the shape lending the impression of a much smaller pipe. A creative juxtaposition from Huber, and it's commended further by well-oriented flame grain running through the shank and around the lower bowl.
