David Huber: Sandblasted Long Shank Flounder
Product Number: 002-755-0058
Flounders are fish whose lateral symmetry is unexpected, and this Flounder from David Huber adheres to that definition. Here the surprising element is the shank, which extends from the bowl in a slight upturn and appears to be massive in two dimensions from a side view. It's almost as high as the bowl from that angle, but from above we see its dual nature and its more slender and flaring posture as it reaches to the mouthpiece.
While vertically imposing from the side, the shank is slenderized from an aerial perspective and expands as it proceeds to the stem, revealing its compressed nature through the center. Very crisp ridgelines are symmetrically situated at the top and underside, blending into the bowl with impressive precision at the transition. The bowl is wide with substantial chamber walls, and is crowned with a smooth, inflated rim that matches the texture and tone of the smooth shank end. The stummel is contrast-stained to illuminate cross-grain orientation, and horizontal growth rings step up the near and far sides of the bowl. No one has a pipe like this. It's a shape that will impress with its originality and execution.- Chuck Stanion
