David Huber: Partially Sandblasted Freehand Rhodesian Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-755-0059
In a similar style to David Huber's Razor Egg designs, this Freehand Rhodesian juxtaposes hard lines against supple curves. The shank of this piece resembles a cats eye in cross section, like Huber's Razor Egg; however, instead of vertically oriented, it's horizontal on this design, the resulting ridgelines flowing down the flanks. David, then, continues the trajectory of these lines through the bowl's base, effectively separating the pipe's underside from the rest of the composition in Volcano-like style. Above, the bowl rises to rather squat height, prioritizing breadth and muscularity over height, and the rim undulates softly for playful, accenting line work in profile. For added stylistic diversity, the outer edge of the rim is actually composed of a slender panel, running all around the circumference and separating the rim's smooth finish from the sandblast below. That smoothness is echoed by the underside, highlighting a sea of birdseye, while the bowl's flanks wear a crisp sandblast and ruddy contrast stain.
