Dirk Heinemann: Sandblasted Horn with Juma Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-793-0071

With a master's degree in design from the University of Hanover and a background in furniture design and carpentry, German artisan Dirk Heinemann was well equipped to begin a career as an artisan pipe maker, both literally and figuratively. He possessed the necessary skills and imagination for thinking up and making amazingly creative designs, but also a fully-kitted workshop that could be used for his new passion without too much retrofitting. His main focus for his pipes is for them to be elegant, functional, clean, and fluid, all of which are present in this Horn: a deceptively complex and beautiful example of the freedom afforded by this modern classic shape.

There is a powerful asymmetry present in this piece which I really appreciate, as it adds a distinctive bit of dynamism to the shape while maintaining its clean-lined sophistication and iconic outline. The consistent expansion of the profile is also maintained, with the sleek saddle stem's bit pushing out from a base that tapers as it exits from the shank end. Said expansion is a bit more reserved than in some examples of the shape that we've seen, though this contributes to an overt muscularity present in the stummel. Flanking ridgelines frame the sides, following the flow of the briar as it slowly lifts into the bowl and flares to the domed rim, keeping things crisp and drawing the eye to the subtle shaping details the stummel possesses. These details mainly manifest as a pair of peaks, one at the fore and aft, which are placed opposite each other in orientation, with the fore's set right to oppose the aft's left. Both of these raised areas follow a path to the stem base, and both take on a very slight curve as they do, leaving the outline of the stem base looking almost identical to the rim. These peaks also push the right flank's ridge further forward than the left, adding even further asymmetry to the composition, and result in a feel that's supremely comfortable. Dressed in a crisp, earthy sandblast, this pipe showcases some wonderful grain throughout, while rich contrast is offered by the pale hues of the Juma stem.
