Dirk Heinemann: Smooth Blowfish with Ox Bone Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-793-0094
Dirk Heinemann fashioned this Blowfish for the Chicago Pipe Show in 2024, and for me, it was one of the standout pieces on his table during the show. Blowfish are rare designs from the German artisan and smooth renditions even more so. Moreover, this pipe features all of the trappings, intricacies, and practicality that interest discerning collectors and seasoned pipe smokers. As is characteristic of the Blowfish shape, it features a cross-grain-laden central panel that divides the stummel into two flanks of stunning birdseye. Heinemann has shaped the panel perfectly to frame the briar's grain orientation, and the corresponding ridges flick outward at the transition to resemble subtle fins.
In profile, the shank commands considerable attention — a design cue often explored by Heinemann in his work — as it flares toward the stem. Tilted to the left, it reveals an asymmetrical stance and a triangular cross-section to best follow the grain, and the end has been deftly accented by pale, faintly speckled ox bone. Most impressive, though, is how Heinemann merged bone and briar with an undulating line at the junction, which is matched beautifully by the hand-cut stem's base. Remarkable craftsmanship combines with beautiful briar in this piece, all highlighted by a deep, chestnut contrast stain.
