Il Duca: Sandblasted Morta Apple (B)
Product Number: 002-427-0411
While this straight Apple doesn't come across as "outside the box" compared with the rest of Max Rimensi's portfolio, it's very much off the beaten path in regards to traditional classics. This is partly due to Max's penchant for using morta, a material that comprises few carvers' bodies of work, let alone a large majority — as is the case with Max. Shape-wise, it's a form we've seen often from Il Duca, pairing a bulbous, affably round bowl on the end of pinched shank that flares elegantly toward the end. The morta's unique, sandblasted texture stands out from the jet-black color palette, crisp ridges lining the stummel and offering a unique blend of smooth and grainy textures in hand, and while the stem resembles a mount arrangement, with matching cumberland at the shank end, it's actually a saddle stem, having been fashioned from forest green-hued, brindled vulcanite.-Truett Smith
