Il Duca: Sandblasted Bent Apple with Horn (B)
Product Number: 002-427-0417
While the maker's of many pipe designs are recognized by the shaping of the bowl or perhaps the finish itself, there are some who are known for how they fashion the curves of a shank and stem. Dunhill comes to mind with their vintage "swan neck" form; Castello has a uniquely recognizable bend and curl to many of their bent Eggs; and then we have Max Rimensi of Il Duca. Few times, if ever, have a seen a fully bent piece from Max. Instead, the talented Italian carver caters towards a more subtle and sinuous S-curve, lithely curling the shank from out of the transition echoed, then, by the stem's recurve downward. The aesthetic is here seen paired to a plumply rounded bowl in this bent Apple offering. Delightfully full-bodied in hand and wearing a vivid contrast sandblast, it's accented with a creamy ferrule of horn as a mount and makes for quite the eye-catching smoker.-Truett Smith
