Il Duca: Sandblasted Natural Nautilus (D)
Product Number: 002-427-0424
It's been nearly five years since we last received a Nautilus piece from Max Rimensi, but it's safe to say it was certainly worth the wait judging from this gorgeous example. While Bo Nordh pioneered the shape, the Nautilus continually remains an incredibly difficult form to execute well and approach in fresh, unique ways. We've seen numerous interpretations of the shape from artisans over the years, especially from Danish carvers featuring highly stylized forms. Here in Max's approach, he has swirled the shank into a golden-ratio inspired pattern rather than leaving it open, which is common among most Danish renditions. The crisp sandblast has been left in a natural finish, which should darken brilliantly over time and use. Its eye-shaped rim was finished smooth, adding some nice, subtle textural variety to the composition. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how Max continues to refine and perfect the shape even further in the future.- Jeffery Sitts
