Il Duca: Smooth Bent Apple with Horn (D)
Product Number: 002-427-0426
One of Max Rimensi's more overtly Danish-inspired designs, this Il Duca bent Apple is an elegant take on the shape, full of supple curves and smooth line work throughout. The bowl is rather Acorn-esque in its shaping due to the high-set waistline and a subtle ridgeline that wraps around the rim. Said bowl seemingly urges forward from out of the gentle transition, which serves to guide the eye to the plump bowl up front and place the majority of the piece's visual weight upon it. In profile, the rim's orientation slopes downward along the fore, accentuated by the ridgeline that demarcates it from the rest of the bowl. The aforementioned ridgeline becomes less-defined along the rim's aft as it appears to smoothly dissolve into the rest of the bowl. Such a design cue is subtle, yet it plays an enormous impact in informing the overall composition and highlights the rim's broad, inflated disposition. The Italian carver has then dressed the stummel in a light, honey-blonde stain that brings out some vivid streaks of flame grain around the chubby bowl and along the sides of the sweeping shank. The shank flares out ever-so-slightly with the shank face mimicking the rim's rounded nature. Max has then accented this piece with a ring of creamy horn around the stem base, perfectly complementing the briar's light tones.- Jeffery Sitts
