Il Duca: Sandblasted Freehand (B)
Product Number: 002-427-0430
While the Rhodesian is one of Max's most iconic shapes, this Freehand is not a Rhodesian. However, it isn't difficult to see the underlying Rhodesian shape here, and enjoy the modifications. the shank, for example, is of course rounded and flares toward the stem, rather than in diamond cross-section, while the undercurve of bowl and shank perfectly resembles that of Max's Rhodesians. The rim might be viewed as modified Rhodesian as well, with the forward edge crisp and somewhat forward protruding, while the near edge drops in an organic curve toward the sharp transition and almost loses the ridgeline entirely. The result is a unique and extraordinary profile of complementary curves, with the near bowl echoing the upper and lower shank and the undercurve unifying the composition. The blast is craggy and tactile under the finger pads, providing information as compressed as braille, if only we could read it.
Max has chosen one distinct color variation at the stem, a lifesaver-shaped button of off white and black, inserting just a touch of punctuating geometry and dividing the graceful stem from the stummel. Max Rimensi is a master of understatement, even when brandishing creative new renditions.- Chuck Stanion
