Il Duca: Sandblasted Reverse Calabash Dublin (B)
Product Number: 002-427-0437
Not an unfamiliar design from Max Rimensi, this Reverse Calabash Dublin hews closely to other renditions from the Italian carver, though it does stray somewhat from his conventionally more fluid, organic, and streamlined offerings. Quite the opposite, this piece is as hearty and muscular as can be, yet all in compact, nosewarmer length. The transition is more or less nonexistent as the bowl and shank are almost the same width, the insulating walls simply rising and flaring slightly from out of the decidedly thick shank — terminating into a rim of craggy plateau. The shank, of course, features the reverse Calabash's characteristic cooling chamber, and the whole piece wears concise sandblast and contrast stain, resembling the look of grilled corn or squash.-Truett Smith
