Il Duca: Sandblasted Morta Tomato with Horn (B)
Product Number: 002-427-0461
The Tomato is quite a diverse shape when rendered by a talented carver like Max Rimensi of Il Duca pipes, as no two pieces are ever exactly the same. The Italian artisan has previously presented organically inclined renditions as well as refined, minimalist ones. Here, Max has crafted one of his most straightforward renditions to date, though it's not without its intriguing subtleties. The rim's high-set waistline is given more prominence in profile due to a ridgeline that wraps around it. Such an understated shaping cue not only highlights Rimensi's skilled line work, but also allows the piece to conform remarkably well to the hand. The broad, inflated rim hangs just over the neatly-tucked transition that eventually gives way to the subtly flaring shank end.
While the bowl is robust and muscular, this piece benefits from being crafted from morta. The dense material is heralded for its light weight and has been a favored material within Il Duca's portfolio. And when sandblasted, morta can yield some fascinating grain patterns that briar just cannot, offering endless tactile and visual enjoyment. While the majority of the piece displays an all-black color palette, Max has then accented the shank end with a mocha-hued piece of horn, adding a hint of contrast without distracting from the superb shaping exhibited by this piece.- Jeffery Sitts
