Il Duca: Sandblasted Bent Dublin (B)
Product Number: 002-427-0564
Playful and demure, substantial in length but light in weight, this bent Dublin from Max Rimensi of Il Duca is a bit of a contradiction, but in a way that is undeniably attractive. A broadly-flaring bowl ascribes it to the Dublin shape, well rounded at the heel but crisply joined at the transition, for a confluence of curves and angular negative space that invites lengthy examination.
An Italian carver, Max has taken liberties with the classic Dublin design, but in ways that I like, injecting a touch of whimsy into a highly functional smoking instrument shape. A stunning sandblast and vibrant contrast stain dress the piece, making stacks of growth rings and vertical striations unmissable as they rise to a rim of craggy plateau. The plateau is mirrored on the flaring shank end, for an organic, pleasing aesthetic, before giving way to the svelte, downturned taper that is the acrylic stem.- Joel Balyeat
