Il Duca: Sandblasted Billiard with Silver (B) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-427-0573
Max Rimensi of Il Duca has one of the most distinctive shaping styles of any Italian artisan, combining the sleek sensibilities of the Danish design school with a touch of the Italian neoclassical, all with his own touch added in. This particular straight Billiard example is quite classic, the pencil-thin shank and tapered stem serving to balance a comparatively large bowl possessed of a slight forward cant, its walls tapering ever so slightly toward the rim, giving the shape a bit of dynamism. The heel the bowl stands upon is smooth and deftly curved, leading to the straight stretch of shank and sitting under a subtly cheeked transition. The shank end is adorned with a broad band of silver that reinforces the briar at that section, the stem's length of lithe black vulcanite serving to magnify the slenderness of the rear of the pipe and emphasize the bowl's presence. The stummel is dressed in a low-depth sandblast that reveals a tight growth ring structure which radiates from the heel of the pipe to the rim at an angle, with the underside of the piece showcasing a stunning, blasted field of birdseye, each detail dressed in one of Rimensi's stellar contrast stains.-John McElheny
