Dunhill: Shell Briar (4120) (2016)
Product Number: 002-015-3958
Dunhill's "22" and "20" are both iterations of the sturdy-sitting Poker design, but the "20" has the added benefit of a Cherrywood's bent stem. It add a lithe sense of elegant, like a Prince's mouthpiece, while also doing well to better balance the piece when clenched. Offered here in Group 4 size, this one houses a generous chamber under its crisply taper rim, providing good insulation with the thick walls and a delightful feel in hand thanks to the Shell Briar sandblast.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
