Dunhill: Shell Briar Stubby (4101) (2017)
Product Number: 002-015-4014
We've seen a variety of different shapes in Dunhill's lines of Stubby nosewarmers, from the "05" Dublin and "21" Zulu to the "04" Bulldog and even the "07" Prince. Surprisingly, though, this is the first "01" Apple we've come across. Despite the piece's under-five-inches length, the bowl is a generous Group 4 size, offering a chamber that belies the profile's compact proportions. It's the perfect pocket pipe, set for everyday use in the dark-stained sandblast of the Shell Briar finish to hide most handling marks it might pick up over the years.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
