Dunhill: Shell Briar (5109) (2017)
Product Number: 002-015-4050
Not at all a small pipe in Group 5 dimensions (second largest of Dunhill's standard Group sizes), this rendition of the "09" Canadian is a bold, dominant design. In bowl and general form, it resembles the traditional Billiard but with an oval shank, elongated into an abbreviated tapered stem. With plenty of chamber and a substantial feel in hand, it's a robust classic and features a more low-profile iteration of the Shell sandblast, accentuating its glossy, ebony stain.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
