Dunhill: Cumberland (1102) (2018)
Product Number: 002-015-4121
Though Group 1 sized pipes are part of Dunhill's standard fare, these more diminutive pieces are rarer from the English marque compared to other Group sizes, and because of the more petite dimensions, Dunhill's classic shapes sometimes change form slightly when in Group 1. This "02" is one such example, the bowl coming across as almost Apple-like as the curves of the heel extend into the bowl. It's also paired to a slightly longer stem, separating it from the majority of Dunhill's "02" bent Billiards.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."-Truett Smith
