Dunhill: Shell Briar Quaint Rhodesian (2) (2016)
Product Number: 002-015-4151
The Rhodesian is certainly a classic pipe shape; however, this particular rendition doesn't fit into Dunhill's concisely numbered shape chart. Instead, it features a comparatively robust shank and transition, leading into a squat bowl — the defining ridgeline wrapping the bowl just above the transition. It hearkens back to early 20th century pipe design in its stout proportions, the Shell Briar sandblast furthering its traditional appeal.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
