Dunhill: Shell Briar Quaint Paneled Billiard with Silver (3) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4159
Taking the Foursquare design a step further, Dunhill pairs a octagonally faceted bowl on the end of a square shank. Though the silhouette remains true to the classic straight Billiard, the unique use of panels separates this piece from the English marque's standard shape chart — fitting perfectly into the non-traditional theme of the Quaint series. It sits as sturdily as any Foursquare, but offers more texture thanks to the added ridgelines about the bowl, dressed here in the Shell Briar sandblast and boasting a band of sterling silver.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
