Dunhill: Shell Briar Quaint Paneled Bulldog with Silver (3) (2019)

Product Number: 002-015-4160

Dunhill's Quaint series is dedicated to pipes that don't quite fit into the English marque's standard pipe chart. This paneled Bulldog is certainly a departure from the more traditional forms we're accustomed to seeing from Dunhill, slightly resembling an Acorn with the Bulldog's typical taper softened substantially. The crisp ridgelines of the diamond shank dissolve effortlessly into the pert, upright bowl and help form some of the panels in the process. The bowl is also notably devoid of the shape's characteristic beadlines, opting instead for a subtle ridgeline below the gently beveled rim. This Group 3 Shell Briar offering also shows off some of the marque's exquisite silverwork, resulting in a seriously classy dress pipe.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
