Dunhill: Shell Briar Quaint Acorn with Silver Army Mount (4) (2018)
Product Number: 002-015-4162
While the Acorn shape isn't non-traditional within English pipemaking — Charatan and Comoy's have both made their fair share — it isn't a form offered on Dunhill's standard shape chart. That's why it's offered here as a Quaint, the line devoted to forms such as this that don't ascribe to the English marque's rigid shape number designations. It's a sturdy, muscular take on the form, the flaring shank being hearty and robust, matched by the bowl's high-set waistline before it tapers into the pointed heel. Further added flash, the tenon and stem base are wrapped with sterling silver in a durable army mount construction.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
