Dunhill: Shell Briar (4110) (2018)
Product Number: 002-015-4170
Typically, Dunhill's "10" shape is a classic iteration of the traditional Liverpool, and in silhouette, that's exactly what's presented here — the bowl upright and stolid, with the shank elongated out back and the tapered stem abbreviated. In hand, however, you'll notice that the shank bears a Foursquare-like orientation, the edges also paneled with trimmer facets for a thoroughly geometric and architectural touch. Such a unique accenting touch allows the pipe to sit upright and is something not often seen in Dunhill's standard line, usually reserved for the Quaint series, making this a rare offering in handy Group 4 size.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
