Dunhill: Shell Briar Quaint Rhodesian (4) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4174
Calling to mind an old-school Comoy's shape, this Dunhill Rhodesian is defined by an extra-stout shank, the transition rising almost all the way to the bowl's characteristic ridgeline. While the form is reminiscent of the English marque's "08" Rhodesian or "17" Bulldog, the combination of straight and round shank is unique enough for the Quaint series, which consists of shapes that aren't found on Dunhill's shape chart.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
